and if washington can make a deal before you start paying more. with me is democratic strategist marjorie cliften and gerri jacobus. welcome to you both. listening to john boehner today and the president, it's pretty clear there's no deal anywhere near being settled here. i don't know about you, i'm just getting really bored with it. why don't they just get round a table and get it done? let me start with you gerri. >> i think the president going to pennsylvania to the tinker toy plant on a campaign stop essentially is probably not going to go over as well as he thinks it does, particularly since we thought we were done with that. we just went through it a few weeks ago. thought campaign stops were over and he inflicts this on us again. the american people expect him to sit down with the republicans in congress and work this out. now, a year ago or so, last year, he agreed to $800 billion in tax hikes. that's kind of where the number was. he comes back with twice that and when he gets obviously a no from republicans, you don't double it and say that's okay. he immediately goes out on the campaign

'm alina cho in new york. >> and i'm dana bash in washington. john and zoraida are off. >> a developing story in afghanistan. an adviser to the afghan police has been shot and killed by a woman wearing an afghan police uniform. the latest in the series of green on blue insider attacks and our pentagon correspondent barbara starr joins us live with details on that. good morning. how unusual is this? >> well, alana, sadly this is a story we've report sod often during the year, haven't we? the details on this attack are different in one respect. as far as we know this is a case where a woman, an afghan woman in a police uniform conducted this shooting and killing. a contractor in cab uhl police headquarters. the nato alliance has already announced the incident but not said the nationality officially of the contractor involved. this typically does not happen where the perpetrator is a woman. they are going to have to determine, of course, if she really was an afghan police officer or perhaps the uniform was stolen or she somehow came into possession of it. a continuing issue in afghanistan

in washington. very unusual, people from washington and california calling and saying we want to help with this. it's got to stop. i even had one man who was a member of the nra who said i have an ar-15, and i'm going to get rid of it. i'm a hunter, and i want you to do something about these assault weapons. so i'm going to do my level best to try. i did it once before in 1993. we sat down and we wrote a bill, and that bill passed the senate. chuck schumer introduced it in the house. it passed. it was not amended. it was passed. and it went to the president. president clinton signed it, and it was the law for ten years. and over time, it began to wind down the supply of these weapons. and particularly the clips, drums, or strips of over 100 bullets. i mean, you have to realize the person that went into that heater in aurora had a drum with 100 bullets in his assault weapon. fortunately, that drum jammed or else he would have had 100 clear shots at people sitting in seats in a movie theater. now, here you probably had this man fire more than 100 bullets. i mean, we've just heard where no child h

washington loves like a deadline. and it's got a big one three days from now. that's when we go over the fiscal cliff. and possibly back into a recession. cnn's lisa desjardins has the latest on negotiations from capitol hill. >> reporter: don, the stakes are very high. i think leaders are paying close attention to that. that may be why we're hearing a change of mood in the capitol right now. even the weather was different. beautiful snowfall hit the weather this morning. that's what the weather was like when mitch mcconnell came to work to try to reach a deal. if he can't forge a deal with democrats, here's what's at stake. let's look first of all at what's involved in talks. at the top of that list, tax rates. if we go over the fiscal cliff, tax rates will go up 9% to 33% for most all americans. that would also mean havoc for payroll companies and the irs that would have tro stro struggh how to handle withholding starting on january 1st. also unemployment benefits, those actually ran out today. that's something that republicans and democrats, we understand, are talking about right

crowley in washington with the latest on the fiscal cliff negotiations. there was a big meeting at the white house today between the president and the four leaders, two republicans and two democrats on capitol hill. senator harry reid told reporters afterwards that the next 24 hours would be very important, as he and republican leader mitch mcconnell try to put together something that would pass both of their caucuses, that republicans in the senate would vote for and that democrats in the senate would vote for. and then, of course, it would have to go to the house. now, the majority leader senator reid said he's readying a bill for a vote on monday to prevent a tax hike on incomes up to $250,000. senator reid said his bill will include all of the additional provisions that the president outlined that include long-term unemployment benefits, a continuation of those. that would be sort of the plan b for democrats simply because what they would rather do is get a bill with senator reid working in conjunction with senator mcconnell. senator reid said he's awaiting good faith propos
